From Student to Entrepreneurial Success Story
This is the story of starting Docstoc in my last year of law school at Pepperdine University. Docstoc is the premiere online destination to start and grow small businesses. It consists of an electronic document repository and online store aimed at providing professional, financial, and legal documents for the business community, as well as other resources including expert videos and productivity tools. Our vision is to be the ultimate destination and resource site for small businesses. Creating it was my first attempt to build a web application. I wasn’t technical, and I had never done anything like that before. I went into it thinking that at some point I would need to bring in additional financing.
The key part of it succeeding was just that I made a committed decision to pursue it before there was external validation that I was going to be able to figure it all out. I found that if you have big enough Why, you figure out the What and the How. Over the period of about a year after we started working on it and took it from just an idea to a live website, we raised a couple hundred thousand dollars in angel investment, and people started using it, and we were off to the races.
