From Almost Dying During Surgery to Helping Others Heal
In 1999, when I was in my early thirties, I was diagnosed with Subclavian Vein Thrombosis. I woke up one day, and my arm was totally swollen. “No problem,” I thought, but my friends made me go to the doctor. Good thing I went. It turned out I had a blood clot.
After coming out of the urgent state of the condition, the doctors recommended surgery. Being fairly ignorant, I did the surgery, and had my first rib removed. It was a horrible experience, with many complications, and emergency follow-up surgery—I think I died on the table at some point. After the surgery, I needed years of physical therapy. After a year, they told me my insurance wouldn’t cover physical therapy anymore, and they said I might want to try some weird thing called “yoga,” and perhaps that could help me.
