A single mother raised my older sister and me. We moved maybe thirty times before I was eighteen. I had so many new experiences and opportunities with all the moves that I perhaps have a different approach to risk than most.
My mom raised us on less than $14,000 a year. Her strategy was different. She said she would rather live in places that she couldn’t necessarily afford than to subject her children to being around people who were mentally impoverished. Mom believed being financially poor was not synonymous with thinking poor. Some people, regardless of their socioeconomic status, feel this is just my place, and I’m going to stay here on the poor side of town or in a gated community. These people never take a calculated risk or venture beyond what’s inside their bubble.
